Durango Week Seventeen

Hello, friends!! I hope you all had an amazing week! Here in the Durango 2nd ward we sure did :)

I have to start with my favorite story of the week. We taught Louie about the Word of Wisdom and at first he seemed really apprehensive, but as the lesson progressed and we testified that the Word of Wisdom IS from God, the Spirit seemed to help him warm up to it. But then we asked him, "What would it take for you to live the Word of Wisdom?", which he responded to with: "A bolt of lightning!". Here's my favorite part. Not a SECOND after he said that a HUGE PELICAN FLEW RIGHT OVER US NOT 10 FEET ABOUT OUR HEADS GOING PROBABLY 200 MILES PER HOUR (that's an estimation. I don't know how fast she was actually going). And we all kind of duck a little bit and after she's gone, Louie looks up and he's got these huge eyes and he just goes, "I think that was my bolt of lightning." SO basically Louie is going to be working on the Word of Wisdom. Now we just have to teach him not to ask for signs.

God sure does have a sense of humor!

Now my other favorite part of the week. On Wednesday we went on exchanges with the sisters in Pagosa Springs and I got to work for the day with Sister Lazzari here in Durango and something amazing about Sister Lazzari is that Spanish is actually her first language so she's fluent in English AND Spanish!! So knowing that we would be having a sister here this week that speaks Spanish, we set up an appointment with a family who only speaks Spanish except for the 13 year old daughter (we made the appointment through her) so that we could communicate with the mother. Side note: remember that miracle from week 3 or 4 or something in Durango when we had come across the name Madeline in our records of potentials but didn't have any way to contact her because there was no number or address? And we ended up knocking on a random door at a random time and FOUND HER? Well that's the girl who's mom only speaks Spanish. And that's who we had the appointment with on Wednesday with Sister Lazzari. So we get there and they let us in and we start with a prayer and start talking about their religious background and Irma (the mom) is talking in really fast Spanish but Sister Lazzari is keeping up because she's incredible and I just catch a couple things here and there that I kind of understood. Basically all I got was Irma mentioned the Catholic church, the Holy Spirit, feeling peace with your church in your heart, and she was happy when we gave her el Libro de Mormón. The rest of it I pretty much missed. Turns out though I did get the gist of what they were talking about! After we left Sister Lazzari filled me in on what all had happened so now I'll give her end of the story: we got there and exchanged pleasantries and said a prayer and as we started talking, Irma told us her family has been in the Catholic church for generations but she thinks any church is good as long as you feel peace in your heart when you go there. And then she asked if she could come to church with us sometime (yes!!!!!). We shared an old Easter video (He Lives) and she was really happy to see that we believe in the same Jesus Christ that she believes in. She asked what the difference between our churches is and Sister Lazzari brought up the Book of Mormon and gave her one and testified of it and told Irma she could keep that one, which she was really happy about and she said she would read it. Then (this is my favorite part) Irma told us thay when we first got there she was going to tell us to try another night because she wasn't feeling too good, but something told her to let us in and listen to our message and after talking to us, she said she felt "rejuvenated" and so much happier. Sister Lazzari told her that was the Holy Spirit and she seemed to agree. But guys. She felt the Spirit!!!!!!! And we're going back next Wednesday! And Sister Lazzari is going to be here again! Miracles. Miracles. Miracles. It was a neat experience for me because, although I couldn't understand everything that was said, I still felt the Spirit really powerfully. I was reminded that the Spirit speaks in a language that everyone can understand, as long as they're listening!

Another highlight of the week was skyping home yesterday! Wow I just love my family. They are ABSOLUTELY perfect for me!!! Heavenly Father really knew what He was doing when He put us all together. And Mother's Day might be one of my favorite holidays ever now.

(If you haven't watched the church's video for Mother's Day yet GO WATCH IT. It is so beautiful. And it made me cry. Here's the link:

Go moms!

Lots and lots of love,
Sister Bohman
