Week Two
This week was AMAZING. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is true, my friends.
Big news!! I have a new companion! Now Sister Smith and I are in a trio with the lovely Sister Allred. She's from Idaho and she is just wonderful. The Lord definitely knew what He was doing when He put us together!
We've now taught 10 or 11 lessons I think and I LOVE it. The best part is watching people as they start to understand that God really is their loving Heavenly Father and that He wants them to be happy. The truths of the gospel of Jesus Christ are absolutely beautiful and life-changing and I feel so lucky to be one of the messengers.
Here's a cool experience from the week: My companions and I were studying in preparation for a lesson with one of our investigators, Joan, and we were trying to find a scripture on faith or maybe the blessing of faith and Sister Smith was reminded of Ether 12:6, which talks about how knowledge comes after the trial of your faith, so we all flipped there and it's a great scripture, but I felt like we should look a bit higher on the page. Then I saw verse 4 (please look it up, it's beautiful!!) and I was just like, "SISTERS, look at verse 4!!" And we all just felt like THAT was the perfect message for Joan and it felt great. And when we shared in in our lesson, Joan absolutely loved it and it really spoke to her personally. I can't stop thinking about this experience because it just illustrated to me some of the ways the Holy Ghost works to guide us. First, He brought a remembrance (John 14:26) of a scripture that Sister Smith had read before to her mind, and THEN He gave us a little nudge to look up and once we read the scripture that was meant for Joan, He filled up with peace and joy. I know it wasn't a huge, miraculous event, but it was just a quiet reminder to me that this really is God's work and I can testify that He really does guide He servants. He knows His children and He knows what they need. He knew that Joan needed Ether 12:4 and He helped us to know that as well. God is GOOD.
Something that's been really fun and special this week has been seeing and talking to the new sisters that came in on Wednesday. They're all so special and sweet and it's been so great to get to know them. And there are a bunch more sisters who are also headed to Farmington (we leave MONDAY!!) and we've gotten a lot closer with them and it's been fantastic. I just love being a missionary and I love being at the MTC!!
Another thing that's been in my head all week has been the hymn "Lead, Kindly Light". It has a beautiful message and melody and I love it!
And just one more thing, I've been learning a lot this week about the power of the Book of Mormon. Joseph Smith's promise that you can get closer to God by reading the Book of Mormon and by living the principles it teaches than by any other book is REAL. If you've forgotten your testimony of the Book of Mormon or you don't have one yet, read it. Read it and think about it and pray about it. Moroni 10:3-5 tells us that if we pray with a sincere desire, Heavenly Father will give us a witness that it is true. I can tell you all that that promise and instruction applies to each one of you. Read the Book of Mormon and find out for yourself. Let God give you the peace and comfort and JOY of knowing His full gospel because He really, really wants to.
I love you all and I hope you know your Heavenly Father does too. Being a missionary is the greatest. I love the gospel and I love my Savior, Jesus Christ. I can't wait to get to the four corners and keep teaching!!
